The Rila Monastery is the largest Eastern Orthodox
Monastery in Bulgaria and is located in the Rila mountains in
south west Bulgaria 117 km from Sofia.
This
stunning site sits at 1,147 meters in a remote section of the Rila
mountains accessible by road (2 h from Sofia)
The monastery was founded in the 10th century by John of
Rila (born 970) during the reign of Bulgarian Tsar Peter I
(927-968) and has been supported and
respected
by the Bulgarian rulers since its creation.
The Rila Monastery is regarded as one of Bulgaria's most
important cultural, historical and architectural monuments.
It was declared a national historical monument in 1976 and
added to UNESCO’s list of world heritage sites in 1983.
